We asked DeepFest 2025 speaker Shelli Brunswick (Chief Operating Officer at Space Foundation) what motivated her to focus her career on the space sector and advanced technologies, and she said that from very early in her working life, she’s been “inspired by the impact of strong relationships and shared purpose on tackling challenges, large and small.”

She began her career as an enlisted US Air Force Airman, stationed in Turkey and Germany.

“Living and working in these diverse environments taught me the importance of caring for people, instilled a profound respect for different cultures, and gave me a unique perspective on the power of collaboration in achieving common goals.”

And these experiences in a global setting prepared her to understand the essential role partnerships play in advancing complex fields – like the space industry.

In next week’s newsletter, we’ll ask Shelli to share her perspective on advancements in AI tech for the space industry. Today, we’re laying the foundations for that knowledge by giving you the lowdown on her journey from the US Air Force to cutting-edge space tech.

Can you pinpoint a pivotal moment in your career that changed your perspective on tech development and collaboration?

As she progressed through her career, Shelli’s work in the US Air Force equipped her with hands-on experience of working with the critical systems that enable space missions (including satellites, rockets, and ground stations). She told us that “working with these technologies showed me firsthand the power of space to drive communication, defence, and exploration, and how these efforts could benefit life on Earth.”

“One of the most pivotal roles in my career,” she added, “was serving as a U.S. Air Force congressional liaison, where I represented Air Force priorities on Capitol Hill. Here, I learned that policy truly is ‘the art of the possible.’ It’s about building relationships grounded in trust, working toward common goals, and understanding the power of strategic collaboration.”

What did this teach you about the importance of space tech?

“I realised that space policy and international partnerships are critical to building a thriving space economy and ensuring space exploration remains globally cooperative.

“My transition to being the Chief Operating Officer at Space Foundation broadened my perspective even further. In addition to my military experience, I gained insights into space's commercial, civil, and international dimensions.

“Working alongside commercial leaders, governmental agencies, and international organisations highlighted how interconnected the space industry is

“I saw how ‘space for Earth’ efforts – like using satellite technology for climate monitoring, agriculture, and disaster response – are essential for addressing our planet’s biggest challenges. This solidified my belief in the importance of making space technologies accessible and beneficial to everyone.”

You’ve launched a new project in 2024 – tell us about that?

“In 2024, I founded SB Global LLC to focus on helping people find their way in the rapidly evolving fields of the space industry and beyond.

“As a futurist, strategist, motivational speaker, author, and brand ambassador, my mission is to guide others toward the future of space, AI, quantum technologies, and the careers emerging within these fields. I aim to make the space sector accessible and inclusive, supporting individuals from all backgrounds as they navigate opportunities in future technology. Through SB Global LLC, I’m working to ensure that the industry is innovative and represents the diversity and richness of our global community.

“My career has taught me that space is more than just exploration; it’s a platform for empowerment and opportunity. I’m committed to helping others see the potential of space to transform industries, improve lives, and build a better future for all.”
